Encourage Autonomy

Encouraging Autonomy in Your Students

calendar-mini-icon Tuesday, April 18 at 2:00 p.m. CDT

Duration: 60 minutes

Move over helicopter parents. There is a new level of over-parenting that’s hovering over today’s college students—drone parents. These parents use technology to monitor their kids. Colleges can create a culture of autonomy to help students become more resilient and independent. In this session, we’ll offer guidance on finding a balance between respecting a parent’s need to be involved and supporting a student’s right to grow up and provide examples of what other schools are doing to address these parenting challenges.

Specific topics covered:

  • Characteristics of helicopter parenting vs. drone parenting
  • Strategies to help parents "let go"
  • Case studies for discussion
